What is Red Ribbon Week? Red Ribbon Week commemorates DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camerana, who died at the hands of drug traffickers in Mexico in 1985 while fighting the battle against illegal drugs to keep our country and children safe. The Latah County Youth Advocacy Council’s mission to reduce youth substance use in Latah County is also part of that battle. Youth leadership training, drug and alcohol education, community events, and public awareness campaigns are just a few of the things we do to help keep our community safe. Who is Monte? In celebration of National Red Ribbon Week, LCYAC has engaged former state and federal lead organized crime/drug prosecutor Monte Stiles to speak in all Latah County Schools October 21, 22 and 23. Monte Stiles, our key not speaker for Red Ribbon Week 2013 combines almost three decades of experience as a state and federal drug prosecutor with his passion for wildlife and outdoor photography to create a powerful message of hope and inspiration. “I spent most of my professional life fighting against drug abuse and those who profit from it,” said Monte Stiles. “As the lead prosecutor for the Federal Organized Crime/Drug Enforcement Task Force, I was an eyewitness to some of the darkest aspects of humanity – criminal organizations that traffic in human misery through the sale of heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, and other harmful drugs. Through interviews of thousands of drug users, I know that boredom is often cited as an excuse for early experimentation with drugs or other destructive behavior. In my view, the cure for boredom is to tap into the sense of wonder we all experienced as little children. In the end, this is infinitely more satisfying than anything the drug culture can offer.” Monte comes to us from Boise with the help Elks International who provided a matching $2,000 grant for this program. We are collaborating with the Moscow Chamber of Commerce, Gritman Medical Center and Elks International to host a Moscow Chamber Business After Hours gathering on Tuesday evening, October 22nd from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Martin Wellness Center on Palouse River Drive, Moscow. We invite you to attend this community event. Visit www.montestiles.com to learn more about Monte.
